Expert craftsmanship, premium materials, and designs tailored to your home.

Custom kitchen cabinets and shelving with stainless steel appliances

One of my Ottawa customers recently opened her old kitchen cabinets for the last time. The scuzzy shelves and delaminated cabinet doors were a drag and kept her from truly enjoying her kitchen.

We spoke and landed on custom kitchen cabinets for her home. She wanted something functional, cost effective, and durable, but also a new look to fit her home aesthetic. We were in and out within 10 days and her face at the end said it all. A combination of relief and happiness.

How Much Do Custom Kitchen Cabinets Cost in Ottawa?

Custom kitchen cabinets in Ottawa cost about $1000 per linear foot, with complete kitchens typically in the range from $30,000. Why this much?

We build most cabinets in our own shop, but there's a lot of detailed planning and work that goes into each cabinet set. From planning and design, to material selection, to cutting and box assembly, door/face assembly, construction, door fitting and installation, it's an involved workflow.

A full kitchen would involve countertop installation, new plumbing fixtures, and appliances. We'll work with you to define the scope of your kitchen renovation project.

Then there's materials, most Ottawa homeowners choose birch plywood boxes or MDF for painted or laminated finishes. These materials aren't cheap like 10 years ago, but they last. Add to that hardware like handles and drawer rails, and materials add up; materials are from a quarter to a third of the project cost.

Custom vs. Semi-Custom Cabinets

Some choose to buy cabinets from Ikea which are factory made to standard sizes. This can cut down material costs, they usually don't fit your kitchen perfectly. If cost is a barrier, ask us and we'll give you some additional options.

Custom Kitchen Cabinets Materials

Ottawans love spending time in the kitchen with the whole family. Material selection is one of the most important aspects of cabinets because it affects appearance and durability. Plywood core looks better than MDF when left exposed because of its lovely cross-layered construction. Plywood is made from a variety of species but maple or birch are common.

Baltic Birch Plywood

The gold standard for cabinet boxes and drawer construction. Imported primarily from Russia and Finland, it is an elegant and high quality plywood and features void-free construction. Excellent for exposed interior applications due to attractive edge appearance.

Maple or Birch Veneer Core Plywood

Domestically produced, these plywoods features a hardwood face over a softwood or hardwood core. It is a more affordable than Baltic birch and a great balance of cost and quality for cabinet boxes.

MDF (Medium Density Fiberboard)

Manufactured across Canada, MDF is an extremely flat and stable board making it ideal for painted cabinet doors and laminated surfaces. This product also takes paint beautifully but doesn't hold fasteners as well as plywood and it tends to be very heavy.

Particleboard

The most economical substrate, used extensively in production cabinets. It is light and easy to work but is prone to chipping. Particleboard is what you'll generally find in Ikea products.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are custom cabinets worth the extra cost over Ikea or stock cabinets?
Custom cabinets are built to fit your exact kitchen dimensions. We use high quality materials like plywood instead of particleboard in stock cabinets, and you choose the exact style, finish, and hardware. Custom cabinets are also more durable and offer better long-term value.
What cabinet materials work best for Ottawa's climate?
Plywood-core cabinets handle wear and tear, and Ottawa's humidity swings between summer and winter better than particleboard or MDF. Baltic birch and maple veneer plywood are excellent choices for cabinet boxes for durability and style.
Do I need a permit for custom kitchen cabinets in Ottawa?
Cabinet replacement alone typically doesn't require a permit. However, if your kitchen renovation involves moving plumbing, electrical work, or structural changes like moving a wall, you'll need permits from the City of Ottawa. We can advise on permit requirements during your consultation.
Can you match my existing cabinets or add to them?
Yes, we can build new cabinets to match existing ones or create complementary pieces like a pantry or island. We'll assess your current cabinets and match species, finish, and door style as closely as possible.
