Window Installation in Ottawa
Draft-free, energy-efficient window replacement from a Red Seal Certified Ottawa team.

Old windows cost Ottawa homeowners money every month. Single-pane and double-pane glass with broken seals let heat out all winter, and let the summer heat in. In a city where either your furnace or A/C is running on any given day of the year, poorly insulated windows can really affect your energy bill.
We're general contractors serving Ottawa homeowners with additions and renovations. Our expert team is here to assist with window installation as part of full renovations and as standalone exterior work. Shawn's family brings three generations of construction and renovation experience to every project, and he's on-site throughout yours.
Window replacement is a core part of some of our recent home addition renovations where new windows were added throughout the house, coordinated alongside a full floor addition. We know how windows are timed with framing, insulation, and interior finishes, because we manage all of it on the same project.
Choosing Your Window Frames: Material and Colour
Frame material and colour are usually the two biggest aesthetic and budget decisions in a window project. Here's the short version of how we think about them.
Vinyl vs Wood
Vinyl is what most Ottawa homeowners choose. It performs well in our climate, it costs roughly a third to half what wood does, and it never needs painting or sealing. Modern vinyl has also closed the aesthetic gap. The days of chunky, cheap-looking white frames are behind us.
Wood still makes sense in two cases. The first is heritage or character homes where vinyl would look wrong from the street, or if you're matching existing wood-frame windows. The second is high-end custom interiors where the trim and millwork require a wood finish on the inside. Wood insulates marginally better than vinyl on its own, but once you factor in modern glass packages, real-world energy performance between the two is close.
The real tradeoff with wood is maintenance. Sanding, sealing, and repainting on a regular schedule. Skip a few cycles on the exterior and you're paying for rot repair or early replacement.
White vs Black Frame
White vinyl frame is the default for a reason. Lowest cost, available from every manufacturer, and it will compliment most house colours. If budget matters or your exterior is traditional, white is a choice you won't regret.
Black frames have taken over modern and farmhouse builds across Ottawa over the last few years. They sharpen the look of a home, make the glass feel larger, and pair well with the dark trim and metal roof palettes that are everywhere right now. The catch is a 25 percent premium over white, because the black vinyl needs extra treatment to prevent warping and fading.
There's even a middle ground for homeowners that want it both ways: black on the exterior, white or wood-tone on the interior. You get the curb appeal without committing to dark frames throughout the inside of the house.
Inside a Retrofit Window Installation
Retrofit windows (also called "insert" installation) is the most common window replacement method for Ottawa homes that aren't being gut reno'ed. The existing window frame stays in the wall. The old sash, glass, and operable parts come out, and a brand new window unit drops into the existing opening.
Here's what goes into a typical retrofit assembly:
- The new window unit: A complete, factory-built window with its own frame. The window is typically custom fabricated for your house.
- Insulation, backer rod and sealant: Low-expansion spray foam and a flexible foam rod for insulation and sealing
- Exterior capping: A custom-bent aluminum coil
- Interior trim: Existing casing gets reused where it's in good shape, otherwise new trim is cut and installed.
When Retrofit Is the Right Call
Retrofit works well when the existing frame is square, dry, and free of rot. It's faster than a full-frame replacement, less expensive, and it doesn't disturb your interior drywall or exterior brick. You sacrifice some energy efficiency, but for most Ottawa homes retrofit is the practical choice.
Energy Rebates for Window Installation in Ottawa
Ontario's Home Renovation Savings program offers $100 per rough opening for qualifying new windows. It's a useful offset on a window project, but there are a few conditions to verify.
Windows are just one of the energy efficient renovations that qualify for this grant. The program requires you to start with a home energy assessment and complete at least two energy-saving upgrades. Bundle three or more upgrades and you unlock a bigger rebate.
